Kieren Heron, Sport Development Manager at Kids Planet, who is an experienced coach based at Kids Planet Clifton Lodge, revealed that supporting new sports coaches is his favourite thing about his role.
He has recently paid a visit to Kids Planet Tender Years nursery in Leigh to deliver training (photographed) and has many more visits to other settings in the pipeline. By supporting other members of the team across Kids Planet, Kieren is pleased that this encourages more males into what is a traditionally female dominated sector.
He said: “Male role models are something a lot of nurseries don’t have. The easy answer to tackling the lack of men in early years is to employ more men, but it’s also about getting them into something they are interested in firstly – such as sports – and then opening up their world to the possibilities of early years.”
Not only is it a great way to encourage men into the early years and create a diverse range of role models for children, we can also see first hand the benefits for the children in terms of their health, wellbeing, sleep and much more.
“I enjoy working alongside the other coaches showing them games, coaching techniques and also bouncing ideas off each other in terms of how we can deliver sessions to the children. The coaches appreciate the feedback and it also helps myself improve aspects of my coaching,” he revealed.
Alongside coaching the children and coaches, and representing the company at many careers events, Kieren’s passion has even led him to get involved with the creation of a new outdoor curriculum which will be coming soon!
