Kids Planet Edgbaston is a well-established Montessori nursery in Birmingham, set in a lovely Victorian property with large outdoor space.

Acquired by Kids Planet in early November 2022, the nursery’s approach was complementary to our own values around awe and wonder and the importance of outdoor learning. The idea is that children have an innate sense of wonder and curiosity, and Montessori only encourages and expands upon that.

What is the Montessori approach?

Montessori is a child-led teaching method developed by Italian physician Dr Maria Montessori. It recognises that children learn in different ways, and accommodates all learning styles.

It is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play.

How does it work?

Children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the highly trained teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process using accessible furniture.

This holistic approach aims to develop children’s social, physical, emotional and cognitive abilities through exploring the world around them and using their imagination.

Why choose a Montessori nursery?

Beginning at an early age, Montessori nurtures order, concentration, and independence. Montessori nurseries spark joy in learning, and encourage socialising and empathy.

Choosing a Montessori environment for your child has many benefits. Known for individually paced learning and fostering independence and confidence, the Montessori Method provides a level of freedom and support for children to question, and make connections.

At Kids Planet Edgbaston, each child is viewed as an individual, and are part of a close, caring community. They have freedom within limits to decide what their focus of learning will be, and are well-supported by our enthusiastic practitioners. We are proud to support developmental interests, purposeful engagement and concrete exploration which leads to practical skills and abstract knowledge. We promote self-discipline and mutual respect at all times.

Our indoor and outdoor areas are designed intentionally with materials and daily routines to encourage children’s self-regulation and unique learning styles. We know that children learn in many different ways, and children are guided by our team to learn at their own pace, discovering the world around them.

We have 2 sheltered outdoor areas that are accessible at all times, which expands the learning area and provides more opportunities for children to learn in the open air. We also have fruit, vegetable and herb garden areas, which the children plant, tend and harvest for cooking activities. In addition, we have a huge garden play space, which is divided up into several different areas.

The patio area is an open space for the children to develop their gross motor skills by using bikes and scooters and carrying out dance and exercise routines. The grass area is very popular for races, football and obstacle courses and houses our pirate ship. The forest area has a range of homes for insects for the children to study and a treehouse for bird watching (and fending off pirates) with a chalkboard for writing opportunities and a slide.

Our barked area has a maze and balancing beams and a great space for hide-and-seek. We have a mud kitchen for the children to make mud pies and roleplay with their friends. Opposite the mud kitchen, we have a construction area for children to practice their S.T.E.M. skills. We think it is very important for children to get outside and explore their environment, so we take the children outside to play every day, in all weathers.

As a Montessori nursery, the team is passionate about promoting early education and self-confidence, providing a high level of care and stimulation in a family-style setting.

Kids Planet Makeover

The nursery has been settling into the group and is undergoing its Kids Planet makeover after being acquired by the group. This full building refurbishment has included getting new signage, rooms painted and new flooring, and lots of new resources.

The team is really embracing the newly introduced natural elements. The environment is a crucial aspect of Kids Planet’s offering, providing children with the space and resources to play, learn, and explore. Calm environments and neutral spaces are paramount to the Kids Planet ethos, with loose parts and magical items to capture the children’s imagination and curiosity.
