At Christmas time, it’s important for children to reflect on what the Christmas period is really about – spending time together, giving and receiving, and helping others. We reflect on some fun and important ways to inspire and teach children all about the magic of Christmas:
Learning about the joy of Christmas
You can easily bring the story of Christmas to life and really grab children’s attention by taking the lesson outside of the classroom. Kids Planet Eccles recently took pre-school children on a lovely walk to their local church, where Reverend Ross taught the children all about the story of Christmas. The children really enjoyed this and it opened up lots more discussions within the nursery.
Giving back
It’s important for both adults and children to take time to help others during Christmas time, from ideas such as visiting a nursing home, or donating food and presents. Here at Kids Planet, we have supported several initiatives so far this year.
Head Office donated presents to local Warrington Charity, William’s Gift for their Christmas Smile Appeal, providing ‘boxes of smiles’ packed with love and well wishes for children and their families in hospital.
And many of our nursery settings got involved in gestures of goodwill, with Kids Planet Sale donating lots of toys for disadvantaged children in Trafford and Wythenshawe with the Salvation Army, Kids Planet North Wingfield exceeding their target of 100 boxes for the Operation Christmas Child Appeal, Chester and Great Boughton raising hundreds of toys for the local ‘One more gift’ appeal, and much more.
Giving thanks
Teaching children about thanks and gratitude is important at this time of year, and can be done as easily as helping them create hand-made thank you cards for their families.
Spreading joy
Children are a vibrant, integral part of the community, with the ability to light up the lives of those around them. Something as simple as painting rocks (something our Lymm nursery enjoys) and leaving them to be found with a message, can make a huge difference to someone’s day.
Reading books
There are many books that teach the spirit of Christmas and enable you to bond and spend quality time with your little one, and below we have provided some ideas:
‘Share some kindness, bring some light’ by Apryl Stott
‘One Snowy Night’ by Nick Butterworth
‘Under the Stars’ by Rosie Adams
‘Christmas Farm’ by Mary Lyn Ray
We hope you enjoyed this blog. Kids Planet wishes all families a wonderful Christmas time full of love and joy.
