The First-Time Mum Survival Guide

Navigating the beautiful, chaotic, and wonderful journey of early motherhood.

There’s no denying that parenthood is challenging! Whether you’re entering motherhood for the first time or learning to parent multiple children, you can expect the journey to be full of uncertainty, excitement, and questions (not forgetting poo explosions).

Kids Planet teams are here to help you through this journey, be it with some helpful advice, a friendly smile, and a safe space for your little one to learn and grow. Here are our top tips for first-time mums and those raising multiple young children.

Phase 1: First-Time Mum & Baby Essentials

Becoming a first-time mum is a joyous and transformative experience. While the list of “must-haves” is seemingly endless, focusing on a few key areas will help you navigate the postpartum period.

Safety & Comfort

Invest in a reliable car seat for secure travel. A sturdy, adjustable crib or bassinet provides a safe sleeping environment, while a stroller or baby carrier suited to your lifestyle makes outings more enjoyable.

Clothing & Supplies

Stock up on nappies (disposable or cloth), wipes, and nappy cream. Opt for soft, easy-to-change onesies and sleepers to keep your baby cosy. Note: At Kids Planet, all nappies, wipes, and formula are supplied by us during nursery hours!

Baby Well-being

Whether breastfeeding (breast pump, nursing bras) or formula feeding (bottles, sterilisers), having the right kit is crucial. A reliable thermometer and nasal aspirator are also highly helpful for early wellness monitoring.

Phase 2: Tips for Bonding with Your Baby

The bond between mother and baby sets the stage for emotional, social, and cognitive growth. Every relationship is unique, trust your instincts and enjoy the journey.

Skin-to-Skin Contact

Holding your baby against your bare chest creates security and closeness, while helping regulate their heart rate, breathing, and temperature.

Engage with Them

Sing lullabies, narrate your day, and engage in baby talk. These shared experiences and sounds encourage vital language development.

Emotional Self-Care

To bond well, you must be emotionally nourished. Take time for rest; when you are relaxed, it positively impacts your interactions with your baby.

If you find it challenging to bond or feel you may have signs of postnatal depression, please seek support. Talk to your partner, family, or healthcare provider for guidance.

Phase 3: Managing Time with Multiple Children

Establish a Routine

Set specific times for meals, playtime, and bedtime. Consistency helps children know what to expect and significantly reduces daily chaos.

Designated Spaces & Schedules

Organise specific areas for play or study so toys and supplies are easy to find. Use visual calendars or apps to help children participate in the day’s plan.

One-on-One Time

Spend focused, individual quality time with each child regularly, even just reading a book, to ensure they feel uniquely valued.
