How to Choose the Right Day Nursery

Choosing a nursery is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in their early years.

Finding the right nursery can be daunting, but when you do, it’s rewarding to know that your little ones will be settled, well cared for, and happy. With so many childcare providers out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by choice.

This guide provides everything you need to know about evaluating a setting, trusting your instincts, and asking the right questions.

The ‘Vibe Check’: Sights, Sounds & Smells

When you visit a nursery for the first time, first impressions are key. It is important to think about the sights and the sounds of the nursery—and often the smells too! You want a setting that feels safe, welcoming, and homely.

Green Flags to Look For

Children seem busy, but relaxed and engaged in their activities.
Staff know the children’s names and chat to them directly at eye level.
Wall displays celebrate process, creativity, and achievement rather than rows of identical, perfect artwork.

Red Flags to Avoid

If you walk into a room and all the children come immediately up to you, alarm bells should ring; they are not engaged with their learning.
Staff who cannot confidently answer questions about the nursery’s routines or educational framework.

Staffing, Safety & Educational Standards

The people caring for your child are the most important part of the nursery. Here is the minimum standard you should expect, which we strictly adhere to across all Kids Planet settings:

Vetted & Qualified

It’s mandatory for all of our staff to complete and pass an enhanced DBS check. All staff are qualified to Level 3 in Childcare or higher (or are actively studying towards it).

Strict Ratios

To ensure your children’s safety and happiness, staff-to-children ratios must strictly meet the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) standards based on the child’s age group.

EYFS Framework

The nursery should follow the EYFS framework, which sets the standard for learning and promotes ‘school readiness’ through continuous provision and play-based learning.

The Essential Questions Checklist

When you attend an open day or a personal tour, don’t be afraid to ask questions. A good manager will be able to provide you with answers or be happy to go away and find out. Take this rapid-fire checklist with you:

Daily Routine & Care

Will the nursery follow your child’s specific sleep routines?
Who will be their primary key worker?
Do you need to provide milk and nappies, or is it all-inclusive?
What food is provided, and do they cater to allergies?

Learning & Development

How does the nursery track my child’s progress and report back to me?
What is your outdoor provision like, and how often will my child be outside?
What SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) support do you provide?

Logistics & Settling In

What is your settling-in process to help my child transition smoothly?
What are your exact opening hours, and do you offer early drop-offs or late pick-ups?

Making the Final Decision

Finding a setting that suits your needs (like a location close to home or work) is just as important as catering to your child’s requirements. But ultimately, trust your instincts; you will know when you’ve found the place where your child will thrive.
