Why fresh air, nature, and unstructured play are essential for your child’s development.
In today’s busy world, it can be challenging for parents and carers to find ways to spend quality time with their children. With many families leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles in a digital age, getting outside is an excellent way to bond and engage in physical activity.
Playing outdoors is crucial for children’s development. It promotes physical health for strong bones and muscles; fosters curiosity and a sense of wonder; and allows children to develop social skills as they interact with peers. Outdoor play also allows children to take risks, build resilience, and develop problem-solving skills.

🧠 Mental Health & Wellbeing
Being in nature and away from technology reduces stress. Studies show it lowers cortisol (the stress hormone). Exposure to sunlight also increases serotonin levels, which helps regulate mood and sleep patterns.
Exercise releases endorphins, improving mood, self-esteem, and confidence. (Just don’t forget the sunscreen!)
💛 Family Bonding
Outdoor play is often unstructured, allowing parents and children to follow their interests and unleash creativity together. Shared experiences, like a nature trail, bike ride, or park visit, help build a stronger bond.
Nature walks are perfect for educating children about plants and animals, or simply enjoying a family picnic.
🌱 Connecting with Nature
When children observe animals, plants, and ecosystems, they understand the importance of the environment. Exploring different textures, smells, and colours stimulates their senses.
Activities like building a garden can teach responsibility and give them a sense of accomplishment.
Encouraging children to play outside can be a challenge in a world where screens and devices are everywhere. Here are some tips to help get your children excited about the great outdoors:
We recognise that outdoor learning is a vital part of children’s development. This is why we provide direct access to secure outdoor play areas for children to access throughout the day.
At Kids Planet, we incorporate the practice of Udeskole. This is the Scandinavian theory and practice of outdoor learning in natural settings, using the local environment to teach. Unlike standard “forest school” sessions—which are often planned events for a selection of children—Udeskole aims to make outdoor learning a day-to-day experience for everyone.
The Benefits of Udeskole:
Udeskole provides a holistic, well-rounded understanding of the world. Want to learn more? Listen to our Outdoor Lead Rhiannon’s story on our podcast!
