The Power of Outdoor Learning Activities for Children

What is outdoor learning in early years?

At Kids Planet we have a deep appreciation for the outdoors and its endless benefits for children. We believe in three key messages:

  • All children have the right to experience and enjoy the essential and special nature of being outdoors
  • Young children thrive and their minds and bodies develop best when they have free access to stimulating outdoor environments for learning through play and real experiences
  • Knowledgeable and enthusiastic adults are crucial to unlocking the potential of the outdoors

Why is outdoor learning important?

Time in nature presents children with a multitude of unique challenges and experiences, supporting all areas of development and there’s a method in the mud!

It is scientifically proven that prolonged time in a natural environment has a tremendous impact on overall health and well-being.

How does outdoor learning benefit children?

Research shows that increased time outdoors improves children’s concentration, encourages higher levels of social interaction, and supports self-esteem.

Our carefully thought-out gardens give children the chance to explore, discover and take appropriate risks day in, day out.

The Udeskole Approach

Over several decades, adults and children in the UK have drifted from nature, spending vastly fewer amounts of time outdoors and this is having a profound effect.

In countries like Denmark (which ranks among the top three happiest countries in the world) they believe the phrase “Friluftsliv” which translates to “living in free air”, captures a deep understanding and connection to nature, a way of life that is, for the most part, spent outdoors from an early age.

Outdoor school – Udeskole

Udeskole, meaning “outdoor school”, refers to time spent outdoors regularly for children during the school day.  It is a way for children to connect to nature and learn in their local environment.

Danish research has shown that children express significantly higher levels of well-being, improved social interactions, and joy while learning outdoors in comparison to the classroom.

Udeskole is a culture, something to be nurtured and created with our whole team, the families we work with, and the local community.

At Kids Planet, we’re keen to meet and challenge our children’s physical development needs.

We understand how important getting outside is for children’s mental health, which is why in addition to Udeskole, we employ dedicated sports coaches across our settings to teach physical development and outstanding physical activities.
