We are delighted to reveal that we walked away winners at the VTCT Awards – with not only the Training Academy being ‘Highly Commended’ as a large training provider, but our Training Academy Director Gill Mason being award for her ‘Contribution to the sector’!

The VTCT group is one of the UK’s market-leading vocational and technical awarding organisation, and these awards recognise the exceptional talent, dedication, and innovation within those industries.

We were shortlisted for:
  • Apprentice of the Year
Rebecca Collett – Kids Planet Training Academy
  • Large Independent Training Provider of the Year
    Kids Planet Day Nurseries
  • VTCT Champion: Contribution to the Sector
Gill Mason – Kids Planet Day Nurseries
Gill Mason, Training Academy Director, said:

“Winning the award for contribution to the sector was overwhelming! The moment when all your years of effort and dedication to the sector is recognised feels quite cathartic.

I believe deeply in the vital importance of the early years and about the role of education in society, and I’m passionate about providing quality training opportunities for the next and current generation of early years teachers and educators.

Moving forward, I am inspired to continue on this quest for parity of status and esteem in the early years sector – and to ensure everyone is aware of the transformative impact of education across all stages of life.”

Gill’s journey

After originally embarking on a career as a primary school teacher working with children with special needs, Gill moved into a career within adult education working with young adults who were facing disadvantages in their lives. She set up her own training company in Liverpool in the voluntary sector securing European funding to provide education and training opportunities to communities delivering a range of vocational opportunities, most notably in early years, Playwork and youth work qualifications.

She wanted to extend this knowledge and impact and moved into a national/international early years and health qualifications advisor role for a large awarding organisation. She was travelling across the UK and Europe doing this whilst also writing qualifications and working as an Early Years Lecturer at a University, and from here she became a principal of a Community College and opened the first vocational Sixth Form College in Merseyside. Seven years ago, Gill met with Clare Roberts, CEO of Kids Planet Day Nurseries, to discuss opportunities and opening up an academy at Kids Planet – and here she is today 30 years on!

Congratulations to all the finalists and winners!
