How Kids Planet supports women in our workplace

Blog

8 March 2023

Although we’re working hard to bridge the gap in the early years sector, the majority of our workforce is female.

We pride ourselves on supporting the women who work for us to flourish and progress within Kids Planet, whilst providing the best support for the little ones in our care.

This International Women’s Day, we want to use the opportunity to highlight how women at Kids Planet are supported all year round, from health and wellbeing, promoting family values, embracing diversity, celebrating loyalty, career progression and much more.

One of our values is ‘happy colleagues, happy kids’ and we strive to meet this every day by ensuring our teams feel supported and appreciated.

In order to do that, we ensure to provide the following support for the women at Kids Planet:

Health

As a childcare company ourselves, we don’t want motherhood to be a barrier to our team’s careers at Kids Planet which is why we offer the following:

Fertility leave

Statistically, at least 15% of the UK population experience fertility challenges and undergoing fertility treatment can be a deeply personal and challenging time for colleagues. To support employees during this time, they are able to take up to 8 days fertility leave at full pay, per year, to undergo fertility treatment, attend appointments and recover from treatment.

Maternity, adoption and shared parental leave

For mothers, spending quality time with your new baby or child is one of the most precious times of your life and we want to help colleagues enjoy this by reducing the financial pressure. Therefore, employees on maternity, adoption or shared parental leave are entitled to 18 weeks paid leave.

Financial

Accessible quality childcare for all is at the heart of what we do and many of our employees are our customers too. We offer up to 80% discount to employees when their child attends a Kids Planet nursery or Out of School club, and colleagues returning from maternity, adoption or shared parental leave also receive the first month’s childcare completely free.

Work/Life balance

We know that if people get stressed and burn-out from work, it can spill into their personal life and negatively affect their wellbeing. For this reason, we focus on providing an environment that fosters a healthy work/life balance and allows our colleagues to bring their whole selves to work.

At Kids Planet, we achieve this through our flexible working options, providing a day off for your birthday, and organising plenty of celebrations and events throughout the year to socialise together.

We also reward loyalty with an increase annual leave entitlement with each anniversary up to 27 days . This ensures colleagues get quality time to relax, recharge and spend time with friends and family, which we understand is very important.

Wellbeing

We have over 100 fully trained and dedicated Mental Health First Aiders across the group to ensure individuals are supported. Not only that, all team members have access to an Employee Assistance Programme, which provides access to lots of information and assistance through an online portal, App and a 24/7 confidential helpline, as well as free counselling.

We have a dedicated Wellbeing Hub on our intranet, with lots of useful information, tools, and simple techniques that can be used to support different aspects of wellbeing. On top of this, our Wellbeing Manager provides the settings and support teams with guidance and support as well as hosts monthly wellbeing initiatives and events, around lifestyle, health and learning topics.

Professional development

We are proud of our strong record of women in leadership across Kids Planet, and we role-model women in leadership from the top down, with our female founder and CEO, Clare Roberts OBE.

With our own dedicated Training Academy, we want our team to find their passion and purpose at Kids Planet, and work with them to explore their options. From apprenticeships, traineeships, higher level qualifications and beyond, the sky is the limit.

We listen

Women at all levels at Kids Planet have a voice, and we LISTEN to it. At Kids Planet we care about everyone’s opinions and ideas, and our Employee Forum enables us to involve our colleagues in developing our culture and the way we work. In fact, many of our benefits and policies are born from feedback and the needs of our teams.

Supporting males, too

We hope it goes without saying, but childcare as a profession is not just for women, and we have been championing men in our sector for several years.

Alongside our wellbeing initiatives for both men and women, the men who work for Kids Planet have an increased paternity leave package of 6 weeks paid leave. The arrival of a baby or child is a precious time for the partner/spouse of the mother or primary carer, and we want them to have the opportunity to experience this time away from work too.

We recognise that the emotional rollercoaster of fertility treatment can also impact the partner of those undergoing treatment. Therefore, employees are also able to take paid fertility leave, whilst their partner is undergoing fertility treatment.
