Kids Planet is delighted to be working with Girls Out Loud, a multi-award-winning social enterprise, joining their Big Sister mentoring programme.

Girls Out Loud is on a mission to raise the aspirations of teenage girls in the UK and beyond, and the programme is aimed at supporting girls at school aged 13-14, who sit in the middle of the cohort and simply cruise. These girls are in danger of becoming invisible and often struggle to find their place.

The programme believes that these disadvantaged, middle girls are future leaders, managers and entrepreneurs. They either hide in the corner or look for validation in all the wrong places, but by being supported by a Big Sister who believes in them, they will learn to be bold, brave, and believe in themselves.

The women who embrace the Big Sister mentoring role also report major shifts in their mindset and a whole host of benefits, from rapport and relationship building, problem-solving and adaptability, active listening, creative thinking and much more.

Clare Roberts, founder and CEO at Kids Planet, is extremely excited about the Girls Out Loud enterprise, so much so, she has become an ambassador for them. She said: “As a mum of three girls, I am passionate about making sure that they, and all young girls, get the right support and opportunities to excel in whatever they feel most passionate about. Having teenagers I can see how difficult it can be for girls at school to stand out, and recognise and embrace their full potential.

I fully support the work that Girls out Loud do, helping young girls to find their voice, find their passion, have all the support that they need and deserve. The Big Sister mentor programme I think is a fantastic way to create a safe space for them to have 1-1 support, something I wish was available to all girls in all schools.”

Maddy Crilley, Business Analyst at Kids Planet, who is part of this year’s cohort, said: “This is an excellent opportunity to provide support and mentorship to a young girl who may be overlooked in her day-to-day life or may need a sounding board for their thoughts and goals. However, it will also be a journey for myself and I have no doubts it will positively impact how I am as a mother to my own daughter and as a friend and peer.

The training has been fantastic both in the support provided and the knowledge shared. The process itself is very carefully managed, and has some wonderful milestones and workshops along the way. So a huge well done to Jane and everyone at GOL for how they have developed the process behind the scenes. It’s going to be a real challenge, but one which I’m really excited to take part in and I’m sure with the training I have received, it is going to be extremely rewarding for both of us!”

What does it entail?

Nine women from Kids Planet have signed up for the programme and will be mentoring between locations in Liverpool and Manchester (St Julies Catholic School for Girls in Woolton, Liverpool, and Coop Academy Manchester, Higher Blackley) over the course of 12 months. Mentors attend a one-hour mentoring session with their Little Sister once a month, three x two-hour workshops,  and a launch and graduation event. The volunteers will grow their professional development and management mentoring, and we can’t wait to see them truly making a positive impact on these young girls’ (and their own) lives!
