The Transition from Nursery to Preschool

Moving up to the preschool room is a significant milestone in your child’s journey toward independence and education.

The shift from a toddler room to preschool can be super exciting, but sometimes a little daunting for both parents and children alike. While it may seem like a small step, it marks a key chapter in their development.

With the right preparation and mindset, this transition can be a smooth and positive experience. We have gathered our top tips to help you and your little one prepare for this exciting new chapter at Kids Planet.

🚀 8 Tips for a Smooth Preschool Transition

1

Start the Conversation Early

Preparation should begin several months before the move. In our nurseries, we will start taking your little one for visits to the preschool room so they can get used to the new surroundings and team. At home, talk to your child about what to expect to help alleviate any anxiety.

2

Foster Independence

One of our main aims in preschool is gaining independence. Encourage your child to take on small responsibilities at home, such as picking out their clothes, feeding themselves, or tidying up their toys. This autonomy gives them huge confidence in a new environment.

3

Establish a Consistent Routine

A structured daily routine helps children feel secure. Set regular wake-up times, meal times, and bedtime routines to create predictability. You can even check our preschool routine times to start syncing with us at home.

4

Practice Separation

If your child is starting preschool without having attended nursery previously, we recommend gradual “settle in” sessions. You can join your child for the first few sessions, then work up to leaving them for a couple of hours until they are ready for a full day.

5

Communicate Positively

Keep your conversations light and upbeat. Talk about the fun activities they will do and the new friends they will make. By emphasizing the excitement of growing up, you help them frame the transition as a positive adventure.

6

Read Books About Preschool

Storybooks help children visualize their new routine. We highly recommend Lulu’s First Day, The Boy Who Loved Everyone, or My First Day to explore themes of friendship and new beginnings.

7

Validate Their Feelings

It is very normal for children to feel a range of emotions, from excitement to nervousness. Reassure them that it is okay to feel unsure and remind them that you will always be there to support them.

8

Patience is Key

Every child adjusts at their own pace. Be prepared for some ups and downs, celebrate their small achievements, and provide plenty of love and reassurance as they navigate this new chapter.

🌟 Internal Room Moves: If your child is already with us at nursery, our teams handle most of the “heavy lifting” for you. We arrange many visits to the preschool room during their normal hours so that by the time they officially move, the environment and faces are already familiar.

Preparing your child for preschool requires patience and a supportive environment. By starting early and maintaining open communication, you can ensure your child approaches this milestone with confidence. It is the start of a magical journey into formal learning!
