The transition from nursery to preschool can be super exciting, but sometimes a little daunting for both parents and children alike! And while this shift may seem like a small step in the grand scheme of things, it marks a significant milestone in your child’s journey towards independence and education. With the right preparation and mindset, the transition can be smooth and positive for all involved! We’ve popped our top tips below to help prepare your child for this exciting new chapter:
Preparation for the transition should ideally begin several months before your child is set to start preschool. In nursery, we will start to take your little one for visits to the preschool, so they can get used to their new surroundings, team, and friends in the room. For you as parents, use this time to talk to your child about what to expect! You could visit the preschool together and help familiarise them with the new environment. This gradual introduction can help alleviate any anxiety or fear your child may have about the change.
At preschool one of our main aims is getting your child ready for school – and gaining independence! At home, we recommend encouraging your child to develop independence by allowing them to take on small responsibilities at home, such as picking out their clothes, feeding themselves, or tidying up their toys. This sense of autonomy will empower them and give them confidence as they navigate the new routines of preschool.
Establishing a consistent daily routine can help your child feel more secure and prepared for the structured environment of preschool. Set regular wake-up times, meal times, and bedtime routines to create a sense of predictability and stability in their day-to-day lives. See our preschool routine times here if you want to start synching with us at home!
If your child is starting Preschool without having nursery previously, it’s essential to gradually introduce the concept of separation. At our preschool/nursery settings, we will arrange ‘settle in’ sessions, where you can join your child at nursery for a few sessions, then work up to leaving them for a couple of hours at a time, leading up to a full day when they’re ready. Speak to your nursery manager about this process for more information!
Maintain open and positive communication with your child about preschool. Talk to them about the fun activities they will get to do, the friends they will make, and the new experiences they will have! Emphasize the excitement of learning and growing, rather than focusing on any potential anxieties or fears.
Reading books about starting preschool can help your child visualize what to expect and feel more comfortable with the idea. Look for age-appropriate books that explore themes of friendship, sharing, and new beginnings to help prepare your child for this exciting transition.

It’s very normal for children to experience a range of emotions when starting preschool! Expect everything from excitement and happiness through to nervousness and apprehension. Be sure to validate your child’s feelings and reassure them that it’s okay to feel scared or unsure. Offer words of encouragement and remind them that you will always be there to support them no matter what!
Finally, remember to stay positive and patient throughout the transition process. Your child may need time to adjust to their new environment, so be prepared for some ups and downs along the way. Celebrate their achievements and milestones, no matter how small, and provide plenty of love and reassurance as they navigate this exciting new chapter!
