The government has just announced its new Best Start in Life strategy – a £1.5 billion plan to improve early years education and support for families. But what does this actually mean for you as a parent, and for your little one at nursery?
At Kids Planet, we know that the first five years lay the foundations for everything that follows – from brain development and emotional wellbeing to future learning and life skills. That’s why we welcome any steps that recognise just how important these early years are.
As Clare Roberts, our CEO, says:
“We’re really pleased to see the government recognising just how important those first five years are. Stronger support for educators, closer links between nurseries, schools and family hubs are all steps in the right direction, so every child can truly have the best start in life.”
A key part of the strategy is attracting and supporting more qualified educators to work in nurseries, particularly in disadvantaged communities. The government is offering financial incentives for early years teachers and exploring a professional register and career framework for our sector.
For parents, this means the value of early years education is being recognised – ensuring the people working with your children are not only highly skilled but also supported in their own careers. A stronger, more confident workforce benefits every child.
In practice, this could mean:
The plan also includes new funding for partnerships between nurseries and primary schools. The aim is to make transitions smoother, so when your child moves on to “big school”, they are well prepared and confident.
At Kids Planet, we already place huge emphasis on school readiness – from building early language and maths skills to encouraging independence and resilience. Stronger partnerships with schools can only strengthen this journey and help children feel excited for their next steps.
Another part of the strategy is the introduction of up to 1,000 Best Start Family Hubs across the country, alongside a new digital hub linked to the NHS app. These hubs will bring together a range of services, offering families advice and support on everything from parenting to child development.
For parents, this could make it easier to:
The Best Start strategy is a positive step in shining a spotlight on the importance of early years. It sets out a clear direction of travel, with measures to support children, families, and the early years workforce.
At Kids Planet, we’ll continue to play our part by championing high-quality early years education, supporting our colleagues to thrive, and working closely with families so that every child can grow, learn, and flourish in their earliest years.
