To brighten up a chilly January morning and combat the infamous “Blue Monday” blues, children from three Leeds-based Kids Planet nurseries came together for a fun Winter Sports Day at White Rose Park.
The event on Wednesday 22nd January brought together 27 young athletes from Kids Planet Oxford Place, White Rose, and Church Walk nurseries. The activities were hosted by Mini Athletics Leeds and included games, races, and competitions that celebrated the many benefits of getting outdoors.
The Winter Sports Day began with an energetic opening ceremony, where the children proudly showcased colourful flags they had designed to represent their nurseries. They participated in a range of activities that encouraged movement, teamwork, and creativity.
To cap off the event, an award ceremony celebrated every child’s effort and enthusiasm. Each participant was rewarded with medals and certificates, recognising their achievements and fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment!
The idea for this special event was inspired by Kids Planet’s Outdoor Learning Report, which highlighted the importance of outdoor play for children’s mental health and wellbeing. The report revealed that 62% of Yorkshire parents believe outdoor activities significantly boost children’s mental health.
Debbie Hughes, area manager for Kids Planet Leeds nurseries, reflected on the event’s success:
“We’re absolutely thrilled with how our first winter sports day turned out. It was heartwarming to see children from across our Leeds settings come together to enjoy outdoor activities and celebrate teamwork and creativity, alongside some healthy competition. Outdoor play and learning is vital for young children, and today showed just how much they can thrive when given the chance to explore and move in nature, even in the cold.”
The day wouldn’t have been possible without the expertise and enthusiasm of Mini Athletics Leeds, whose team led the activities. Haley Leonard, from Mini Athletics, shared her thoughts:
“It was a privilege to work with Kids Planet on this wonderful event. Watching the children confidently take part in the games and supporting each other was truly rewarding. At Mini Athletics, we’re proud to help inspire a love for sport and outdoor activities at such an early age as they are so vital for cognitive and social development.”
The Winter Sports Day was a resounding success, bringing smiles, laughter, and plenty of physical activity to all involved. The event highlighted the value of outdoor play and its ability to nurture children’s mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing – even during the colder months.
